Greyhound
This is to be found Proverbs 30:31 verses 29-31. The reference to the greyhound is slightly confusing as it is the King James version of the translation of the Hebrew words zarzir mothnayim meaning “girded in loins” It Is generally accepted that the words refer to the greyhound which was around at the time although this depiction is disputed by some scholars.

The two beagles were litter siblings born on June 27 1963. Sadly they both died fairly young and were cremated at the Aspin Hill Pet Cemetery and their ashes were buried at the LBJ ranch in Texas.

Hypoallergenic
The term literally means that that the dog will not provoke an allergic reaction to fur or hair. This is welcome by people who suffer allergies, however, It should be noted that whilst certain breeds of dog appear to create a less violent reaction to being in contact with people with severe allergies it is important to spend time with the breed of your choice before adopting. There is In fact no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog only one that is less likely to trigger a reaction in some people. You should also be aware that dogs that don’t shed their coat still need regular grooming and every few weeks will need to attend an establishment that specialises in clipping or stripping the dogs coat.

The owner of Hachiko, a Professor Hidesaburo Ueno suffered a fatal cerebral haemorrhage on the 21st May1925. Hachiko who was in the habit of meeting the train that brought his master home continued to arrive at the railway station each day for another 9 years and became a symbol of dogs loyalty to man. Hachiko has been immortalised in movies and books.

The Appalachian Trail goes from Georgia to Maine in the USA, covers 2,143 miles and is a daunting feat even for a sighted person. This extraordinary guide dog led Bill over the complete distance. Orient became the subject of two books; Blind Courage, published in 1992 in which Bill recounted the adventure and Orient Hero Guide Dog of the Appalachian Trail, published in 1995, a children’s book.

This is where that part of their name originates. Cocker comes from their specially bred ability to hunt Woodcock. The cocker spaniel is a very popular pet, but unfortunately, the breed was found to have a genetic defect, particularly amongst dogs of a flat colour, namely golden, black and red. This is known as “avalanche of rage syndrome” or “cocker rage” This condition also affects other breeds but was identified first in cocker spaniels by Roger Mugford a British behaviourist.

Let’s be honest nobody particularly likes the tax man at the best of times, particularly as we see our hard-earned money wasted by nearly all governments worldwide, but in the 1800s, in Germany, this was an extremely dangerous job. Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann decided that he needed a certain type of dog to protect him and created the Doberman Pinscher. The word pincher was eventually dropped as inappropriate.

Golden Retriever
The modern Golden Retriever is formed from a mixture of breeds and the idea was to create the perfect retrieving gundog.It started by crossing a Flat coat Retriever with a Tweed Spaniel and then other breeds were incorporated including Red Setter, Labrador and Bloodhound.

The Basset is a scent hound with the ability to follow a scent that is second only to the bloodhound. They were assisted in this endeavour by their very long ears which act as a funnel to catch the scent. In French Bas means low and with the added suffix et creates the term extra low, and from this you get Basset.
Due to their weight and very short legs, it should be noted that the Bassett can easily get into difficulties in water. They are very bad swimmers and should be carefully supervised when around water. Basically, they very easily sink!!

Bred in Germany and trained as a police dog his owner found himself in dire financial straits. Fearful that his dog would end up with a less-than-caring new owner, arranged with a friend for the dog to be sent to the USA where he was to star in six silent movies between 1921-1927. The name Strongheart was suggested by the publicity department of First National Pictures who were responsible for the release of his first film.

Well, if you got this one correct you are definitely a bit of a clever clogs! Very few people have even heard of this dog.
The Havanese is a toy dog weighing between 7-14 lbs (3-6kg) and comes in a variety of colours. It is a member of the bichon group, is adaptable, and makes a great companion dog but like many toy dogs doesn’t thrive if left alone for long periods. It is susceptible to separation anxiety.

In the 19th century Captain John Edwardes, a retired military officer created a dog with a very powerful jaw and an extremely white coat so that he could differentiate between his dogs and the quarry. Sadly the Sealyham has fallen out of favour and is now considered to be an endangered breed.

Despite their ancestry being traced back to England in the 16th century, the Great Dane as a breed was created in Germany. It was the favoured breed in the homes of the German nobility and was used for hunting boar, deer and bears. The dog was also used for personal protection.
